it's been a while, but I'm back with some new ideas that might be interesting and very helpful, both time and money savers on the long run.
Today I am going to talk to you about a topic I believe plenty of us have problems with, body hair.
It is there, no matter what you do it grows back, most of it is not useful in any way for the lifestyle in the present day, but since evolution takes its time we can get ahead and try to find a way to get rid of it.

I have been thinking about laser and various similar methods to get rid of some of the body hair for years now, but I never went for it because I didn't want to take the risk of spending quite some money on the process that might be harmful to my skin and is not going to work for sure.
This brought me to consider natural alternatives to get rid of my body hair permanently, or at least to diminish the quantity, the thickness, the growth time, anything that would reduce the amount of time and money I spend to threat the unwanted hair.

The internet research I did brought me to find out about plenty of methods people have been using for hundreds of years, recipes mothers would pass on their daughters, most of whose ingredients can probably be found in your kitchen cabinet or in the local supermarket. Natural methods take time and might, but don't have to work. It could work for one person and not work for another.

I chose the method I was most attracted to probably because it seemed so exotic to me and because it seems to work for most of the people in the reviews I've read, and I will give it a try in the upcoming months. My goal is to get rid of most of my body hair, but will start with just one part.
We are going to discover together whether it works for me since I am going to run you throughout the whole process which should last for 3 months. Worst comes to worst after the treatment I should still have hairy but silky soft skin.

The method I am going to try is a combination of Thanaka powder and Kusuma oil.

About the products I am going to use:

Thanaka powder

Thanaka powder is made from the bark of at least 35 years old thanaka trees (Limonia Acidissima) that grow mostly in Burma. Burmese women have been using the powder for over 2000 years for sun protection and nowadays still apply it on their faces. This tree powder contains antioxidant properties. Besides sun protection, the natural ingredient can help smoothen skin, clarify and constrict pores, moisturize, and control unnecessary oiliness. Studies have also shown that thanaka has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which help to leave acne skin naturally clear and beautiful.

However, in combination with Kusuma oil is it supposed to leave your skin hairless.

Kusuma oil

Kusuma oil is pressed out of the seeds of the precious Kusuma flower (Schleichera oleosa, Safflower). Safflower oil is a natural anti-inflammatory agent that increases cell membrane integrity. It protects you from high levels of toxins and bacteria in the air. It is especially beneficial for those suffering from psoriasis and eczema. It easily removes dirt and oil without drying out your skin and hair. Since safflower oil is sensitive to both light and heat, its recommended that consumers purchase safflower oil that has been stored in a brown glass bottle, and keep it refrigerated after opening.

I suggest you to use the best quality products because it is better for your skin and it is more likely for it to do the trick. I was very tempted to get cheaper version of the powder and the oil which can be found at online shops such as Amazon, iHerb, eBay etc, and was very skeptic about paying a high price for something I don't know if it's going to work, but I gave it a try. I bought the smallest possible quantity, 65 g of pure Thanaka powder for 35,50 $ and 115 ml of Kusuma oil for 15,50 (it was discounted) on Argo naturals. I have no idea about the quantity I am going to need for 3 months and am not sure I will even use it for that long, so I ordered a small quantity to see how it works on my skin.

My first order from Argo Naturals

I got my bikini sugar waxing appointment tomorrow morning and will start using the paste once I have my pubic hair removed. I will apply the paste on a small area for the first couple of days just to see my skin's reaction to avoid the damage (even though there should be none) on the whole area.

How to use:

- Safflower or Kusuma oil, enough to make a paste
- Thanaka powder, enough to cover your hair ridden skin

1. Mix the oil with thanaka powder to get a paste. Apply this to your unwanted hair area at night before going to bed and leave it overnight.
2. Wash off with water in the morning. Use regularly for about 3 months to get results.

I also read the following on http://thanaka.net, where you can find some other useful info:

"Massaging the paste is the most important part of the treatment. Therefore make sure that you invest at least 5 Minutes into massaging the paste into the opposite direction of your hair growth. This way you will make sure that it is getting best absorbed by the hair follicle. Once this is done correctly it should be enough if you leave the paste on for only 30-60 minutes and then wash it off.
More important than applying the paste as much as possible is that you use it in a regular time frame. For example every Monday to Friday from 6pm till 7pm. As with all ayurvedic treatments this makes it easier for your body to become accustomed to the treatment."

This is not a sponsored post and I am not in any way connected to Argo Naturals company. I am showing their products because those are the ones I decided to use based on the research I did. I don't know if articles, reviews and experiences I found online were sponsored.

Glitter sneaker Vol. 2

A year ago i made these baby pink ribbon glitterati sneakers. I loved them since before they were born but didn't have that much of a chance wearing them because they cracked after I wore them twice or so.
This year I decided to give them another chance (the same bad quality shoes) and give them a small twist with a black ribbon.
Lithuania, a single at a wedding and chunks

This past weekend one of the dearest people in my life got married. My gal, my party-mate and a person who says the words at the same time with me even though we don't see each other or communicate in any way at all, for years, someone who understands me and whom I'll always be fond of.
My feelings have put my expectations quite high, and I know that even if it would have been really bad, I'd still have had a great time, but it was AMAZING. Nothing more to add.

It was my first time in Lithuania and I knew quite a few things about the country, the people, the traditions, but everything way so surprisingly nice. Most of it thanks to my very welcoming friends and all the positive energy that was floating around us at all times.
I was amazed by how warm and friendly everyone was, I guess I was expecting more of a northern county treatment but what I received was happy, smiling, ready to help people.

I flew to Vilnius, the capital city, but then I went to the seaside because that is where the wedding was. I stayed at my friend's family house and enjoyed every single bit of it. They were sooo nice to me, but it's my friend's parents, so I guess that doesn't count. It felt like home.

The weather was nice and sunny, just the right temperature, which was important since the wedding ceremony was close to the beach. It was an international wedding but I had most fun with the locals. :)
Lithuanian guys are really something, trust me on this one. It is always a bit weird not having a date at a wedding, but I think it was much better this way :)
The Great Gatsby

It is getting close and closer and I just can't wait for the movie to come out, now more then ever. I love the 1974 version with Mia Farrow and Robert Redford, the story, the acting, the costumes, the music, everything is so good so I am so curious about the new one.
Add the fact that I love Baz Luhrmann's movies, find Leonardo DiCaprio to be a brilliant actor and was totally conquered by Carey Mulligan in "Drive" (if you haven't seen this one, do it, Ryan Gosling's abs, can't go wrong) and you get to understand how excited I am, or somewhere close to it because I'm so waiting for this one!! I can't even watch the trailer because I become so nervous.

Hope you enjoy it!
Recycled music

A couple of months ago I told you about an amazing documentary I watched, "Waste land" (I hope you did/are going to as well). It showed us everyday life of the recyclable-pickers and I have found it rather awareness-raising as well as a great art project.
Now I would like to share with you another interesting project. This time I'll let the music do the talking.
Enjoy!
From what I managed to find out on the internet the original apple strudel is vegan, that's why I have it in brackets. This isn't a simplified version which lacks something or has it substituted, this is the real deal.
Even though it's one of my favorite desserts and my go to hostess gift for dinner parties (and not only) this is the first time I did everything by myself. I would usually buy the puff pastry, reducing working time on 10 minutes. I thought it was about time to take a plunge and get my hands dirty.

Ingredients:

Dough:
-200 g all-purpose flour
-pinch of salt
-1 teaspoon white vinegar
-approx 1/2 cup lukewarm water

Filling:
-3 apples (2 or 4 would work as well)
-2 tablespoons raisins (soaked in the rum and lukewarm water)
-1 tablespoon pine nuts (toasted)
-2 tablespoons demerara sugar (or any other)
-cinnamon (as much as you like, I think it's never enough)
-juice of half lemon
-breadcrumbs if you like, I skipped this
Mix the flour in a bowl with with salt and vinegar, add some water and start working it. Add more water gradually as you need it, you'll figure out how much water you need, the dough shouldn't be too sticky. Form a ball and leave it covered on the room temperature for half an hour.

Cut the apples (I peeled them as well) into small pieces, add lemon juice, raisins, pine nuts (I chopped them up a bit), sugar and cinnamon.

Roll out the dough on a floured working surface, as thin as you can, into a rectangular shape. Spread your filling over the dough and fold the dough. Close the end like an envelope.

Oven for 40 minutes on 180°C.

Sprinkle with icing sugar.

My strudel turned out a bit pale, so I might have put the oven on 200°C as well, will try that the next time.
Girls, season 2 finale

For all of you who still haven't seen it, stop reading now, watch the finale and then come back!

For all rest, what was that?!? Even though I am a huge fan of SATC, Gossip Girl and other chic lit shows, I loved Girls because it was different. It wasn't a happily ever after show and television lacked that in this, young girls/ big city context. It was real, dramatic and, sometimes, disgusting, but that kept it real, closer to us. I'm sure there were times when each one of us could have related to one of the characters, at least for what we could have done. It was no fake promises, stockings from Germany or macarons from Paris, less Nora Ephron, more real life. In the last night's episode it felt as if Lena Dunham said 'let them eat cake'.

As a result we got:
Marnie and Charlie are back for good. No, no and no! He should have dumped her after everything he's been through for her, she never really cared about him. I simply don't believe in this type of second chances, I'm sorry Marnie.
Hannah and Adam? Could have predicted that when they left him in the series, but I so don't like it.
Shoshanna and Ray? One good thing, that girl has to live her life and not being stuck at home with her world-hating boyfriend.

I was sure Natalia, or whatever her name was, would dump Adam after he got drunk and kind of raped her. Kind of because in this episode, she is still there, having sex with him, which confirms her consent for the abuse scene from the previous episode. I thought that was totally wrong, but if I think about it better, this is how us girls are, masochists when it comes to men.

My opinion on this season finale isn't the best one because it changed my whole perspective on the show, but I'm looking forward to the third season to see what way it will go.
Pedro the turkey

Time to time I watch old movies, getting into character comes way more easily than with modern-day cinematography, at least for me. I am not always in the mood for an oldie, nor do I like all of them, but when I find the one I like in the right moment, I keep thinking about that movie for days, running through the scenes in my head.
Last weekend I watched "Giant", an amazing film starring James Dean whom I like so much (I know it's a cliche', get over it) and Elisabeth Taylor. If you haven't seen it, I'd recommend it.
There was this one scene with Leslie's (E. Taylor) kids who didn't want to eat Thanksgiving lunch because they realized it was a turkey they were playing with earlier that day. I think it's such a good example of how genuine we all are in early childhood, it's such a pity that growing up we lose that sense of guilt.
On vegan diet

Almost two months ago I've decided it was time for me to give a go to the animal friendly diet (it wasn't my new year's resolution, it just happened like that). I decided I would try it for a month, just to see how it is.
A month has passed yet I haven't gotten back to my old eating habits. I'm doing this the adjusted way, my way, but it still feels great! I don't know how long I will stick with it, I'm not giving any promises, but I'm certain I will always have the compassion in me.

I have found it very hard to survive on a vegan diet in Italy. I don't want to use it as an excuse, but it really is, trust me! It works perfectly when eating at home, the problem is eating out and at other people's houses. A plant-based diet seems like something so hard to understand, and the few who get it seems they don't accept it. You can't even have a non dairy cappuccino for breakfast!

At the beginning I was feeling tired and grumpy, but then I got some vitamin B complex supplements which helped a lot. (B12 can be found naturally only in foods from animal sources so supplement is needed.)

I have put on some weight which might seem weird because people usually go down, but I have been eating way more white carbs than I did before. I still have to work on that even if I did not do this to lose weight.
I think this is psychological, I feel like I'm substituting animal products... I will figure it out eventually.

Here are the pictures of what I have been eating:
On more than one occasion I was in a situation where I felt uncomfortable refusing food that I "wasn't" supposed to have, so I ate it. If I want to be honest, most of these times I really wanted it.
At my friend's place for a dinner; a friend I haven't seen in ages bringing Laduree macarons for a desert at my place; a friend of mine coming by my place at a late hour with 1 kilo of my favorite ice cream; my (by now) ex flatmate making a Bavarian breakfast just for me (it was an old promise and she had all the ingredients flown in from Germany); my best friend's traditional sushi birthday dinner (and this year it was even a goodbye dinner); my Argentinian friend bringing me traditional cookies from home...
As you can see I haven't been very strict and for now this is how I will do it. I will cook vegan and tend to buy as many vegan products as I can, but for all the rest, eating out, at other peoples' places etc I will be flexible. This is my way.

I am well aware vegan is a lifestyle and not a diet, but I'm not there yet. I'm not ready to completely change my lifestyle and I'm not sure I'm even going there, but for now this is where I stand!
Saving a sweater, elbow patches

My flatmate had this sweater since forever I guess, though you could never tell, and she was about to trash it because both of the sleeves were torn under the elbows. Fortunately I stopped her on time, borrowed it for a couple of hours and gave it back refashioned and ready to wear, with the elbow patches on.

Firstly I mended both of the holes to prevent it from further ripping and then I just hand stitched wool patches that I previously cut out from some leftover material I had.
Creepy Valentine

I was never a big fan of Valentine's Day, I think it is too commercialized and has lost its genuine significance who knows when. Some of you may think I'm just frustrated because I'm single and, to be honest, haven't had a serious partner by my side for quite a while now, but I have actually never liked it.

At 14 I had my first "serious" boyfriend, it was all so sweet, we'd meet after school, go for a walk, hung out at schoolmates' birthday parties, the simple life. He was a really nice guy that I'll remember forever, he was my first kiss after all. On Valentine's Day the whole city was running around with red roses, and different types of heart shaped goods, I got out of school and there he was, my boyfriend, with a yellow rose in his hands (no, he wasn't stingy, he just couldn't find another red rose because they were sold out). It was a nice gesture, but isn't it lame!? Even a kid got trapped into a consumer wheel. I didn't appreciate the rose and I was quite clear about it, wouldn't it be so much nicer if he just came, said "Happy Valentine's" and kissed me.
Or he could have written me a note or something, I'm sure I would have kept that!

(When I was 7, on Valentine's my classmate gave me a hand written card with a note saying he loved me and that the dried rose that was attached to it was the rose his dad gave to his mom many years before that. That is romance!)

I got a bit out of the track, the plan wasn't explaining my Valentine's Day cons, the idea was to let you know why this Valentine has been a bit creepy for me.
My building's concierge is a single man in his 30s, not so good looking, someone people would refer to him as a loser. I've always had a nice professional relationship, I smile, say hello, comment the weather time to time, to make the long story short, he fell in love with me, or at least he says so. When I came back to Milan after Christmas holidays, he gave me a present, a perfume. I thought it was rude to refuse so I thanked him and took it.
This morning he rang for me to come down to pick up a package, too bad it was from him. It was an orchid, a red rose and a crystal statue of a bear with a red heart pendant. I hate these kind of gifts!!! But he doesn't have to know that, it's ok, he doesn't know me. On the other hand, why would you do something like that for a person who told you didn't like you, and didn't want you in her life?! When I said I was uncomfortable receiving gifts from him he said he wants us to be friends! So smart, on the lovers' day you give me a red hearted gift that should be saying lets be friends.
The thing is that these are just some of the things he has done over the years, and when a friend of mine showed me this trailer I had to share it with you. He even looks a bit like a guy from the movie. I don't think I will see this movie as long as I live in this building, but in case I get a rash, I will let you know. :)

I'm sure we all have our own opinion on days like these, and I'm also sure it changes with the changes in our life and with our situation. If I'd be cuddling with my boyfriend, I'm sure I wouldn't be "freaking out" over my concierge situation.
Hope you had a nice day and will be having an even better night. Sleep tight lovelies!Love me if ya darehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09622231067889906398noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-314067681088434753.post-14170543390991509982013-02-12T01:29:00.001+01:002013-02-12T01:29:59.055+01:00

Artsy Sunday

This past weekend we had the most amazing sunny Sunday in
Milan, especially if you consider it has been snowing non-stop today,
actually it still is while I'm writing this. A clear blue sky isn't
something we get to see often, especially during colder months. The
total absence of wind leaves the sky covered with clouds and smog so when you get a nice sunny day, you have to take advantage of it.

It seemed like a perfect time to go and see Tomas Saraceno's "On space time foam" installation that I've heard so much about. Unfortunately by the time I got there all the 360 places were taken (I didn't know you have to go there in the morning and sign up for that day because it is that popular).
I still got a chance to see what it was like, although it is completely different if you actually get inside the bubbles (my flatmate managed and said it was an amazing experience, quite similar to trampoline).

Milan is famous for having quite inefficient public transportation, so we were very happy when we found out that the opening of the seven stops of the new subway line was on Sunday and that one of these was Bicocca, exactly the place we were going at. In the end we ended up walking more than half an hour to the exhibition place because the stop turned out to be so far from where we were going, but it was a nice walk in the sun so we didn't mind. We did take the regular regional train back downtown though.
Ever since I bumped into the first melted crayon canvas on Pinterest I wanted to do it. One of my friends graduation was coming along and I thought it was the perfect gift, rainbow colors crayons turned into an art piece. The whole process was so simple that even a first grader could do it.
I hope my friend will like it as much as I do.
Get your hands on some crayons and start making art!

What I used:
- 30x40 cm canvas
- black and white acrylic paint
- 48 crayons
- hot glue gun
- hairdryer

1. Paint the canvas black (or you can just leave it as it is) and wait till it dries.
2. Arrange the crayons to see exactly how many you need. I matched rainbow colors from 2 boxes of 36 crayons, leaving out "unhappy" colors like brown and grey.
3. Glue the crayons onto the canvas and let it dry.
You can peel the wrappers off your crayons. I liked the writing, so I left them.
4. Prop up the canvas so it is upright and protect your working surface with some old newspaper because the wax will splatter.
5. Turn blow dryer to high heat and aim it towards the middle of the crayons, pointing downwards. It may take a while before they start to melt.
If you wave the blow dryer back and forth across the entire canvas, the wax won’t drip straight down, but I wanted it to be a bit messy, it's up to you.

You can see that the tips have melted down. If you don’t like that, be sure to quit melting them earlier.
6. Let the crayons cool before moving the canvas. Be careful when storing
your art in a hot area (the wax will continue to melt if it gets hot
enough).
7. Personalize it with a few words. I used white acrylic paint and a small brush.
Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur traditionally served ice-cold as an after-dinner digestive. The ingredients are quite simple; lemon zest, alcohol, sugar and water.
It is important to use organic lemons because the pesticides remain in the skin and that is the only part we use for this recipe.
Pure alcohol would be the best choice to extract lemon flavors better, even though you can use any other type of alcohol. If you use vodka or some other spirit the taste will be a bit different because it already has a flavor and because they are too high in water to infuse the flavors properly.
Ingredients:
- 8-10 organic lemons
- 1 liter alcohol (95%)
- 1,3 liter water
- 650 grams sugar

1. Rinse and dry the lemons.
2. Peel the lemons with a sharp knife, being careful to use only the yellow part of the peel, as the white part would make it bitter (you don't want that). Tip: squeeze the peeled lemons and freeze the juice.
3. Place the lemon zest and the alcohol in an air tight glass container.
4. Leave it in a cool dark place for a month, or at least 10 days.
5. Shake the jar every now and then to distribute the lemon oil through the alcohol.
6. Stir the water and sugar in a large saucepan over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Cool completely. (it doesn't have to boil)
7. Strain the alcohol and lemon peel mixture through a sieve into the sugar syrup.
8. Transfer the limoncello to bottles and leave for at least a week before tasting it.
For every 100 ml of water you should put 60 g of sugar. You can decide how strong you want your liqueur to be, it depends on the quantity of water. The formula is quite simple, % alcohol / liquids quantity (water + alcohol).
My limoncello is 95% / 2,3 liters = 41,3 % alcohol. Approximately it is 40% because some alcohol probably remained in the zest. If you want it to be less strong, just put more water, or if you have 40% alcohol (vodka), put less water.
Limoncello seems to mellow as it ages, the longer you keep it, the better it gets.
My first big sewing project

It has been a year since I started <strike>sewing</strike> learning to sew. I made quite a few purses, but I haven't really moved on from that point for a while and with the beginning of the new school year I felt I should push on.
My goal was an over the top embellished faux leather jacket. Inspiration, Balmain spring 2011
The whole process was very long, it took me hours and hours of cutting, sewing, re-cutting, measuring, broken needles, running out of thread, running out of material, written and video tutorials, tutorials in Chinese on youtube, sleepless nights, a mess in my room, needles, pieces of thread and fabric all over the place, not letting my flatmates and my neighbors sleep, countless visits to the closest haberdasher's.
I started with Burda Style October 2009 leather jacket pattern because that's the only pattern I had (I bought it some years ago when I got a sewing machine (I told you about it here) but I didn't really like it so I changed most parts of it. I wanted the front part to be more like Larissa from Burda style (the mustardy jacket in the picture above).
I didn't embellish it as much as intended, but for now I'm good like this, I can always add some more studs in the future.
Sewing this jacket was a great experience for me, I learned so many things, and got more handy with my sewing machine, but to be honest, I don't know if it's really worth it. I would have spent way less money if I went to H&M or probably any other high street brand and got a jacket, and you can always add the studs, and not even to talk about time and nerves consumed in this project. On the other hand, how exciting it's gonna be <strike>when</strike> if someone ask me where I got it!!

This sweet snack is perfect with an afternoon cup of tea, with a bitter liqueur after dinner or pretty much with anything anytime. Put in decorative glass jars tied with holiday ribbon it makes a very nice hostess gift for the upcoming holiday season. You can also store them in a candy jar on the table to treat your guests.

The process is pretty simple but it takes 5-7 days (depends on the thickness of the orange peel), so make sure you start in time. The recipe I am using is very old, there are some quicker versions that allow you to do everything in a day, but if you start early, this one requires less work and I think it comes out better (I have never done it any other way though. I might try it next time).

What you'll need:
- 8 organic oranges (not treated with pesticides because the chemicals remain in the peel)
- 500 g sugar (for 500 g peel)
- 250 ml water

1. Score the orange vertically into 6 pieces (cutting through the peel and not into the flesh of the fruit).
2. Peel the skin and white pith off of the oranges in large pieces.
3. Slice the peels into long strips approximately 0,5 cm thick.
4. Put the peels into a bowl and cover with cold water. Leave it there for 3-7 days (the thicker they are, the longer they stay) and change water twice a day (you should change it because it might go bad). We do this to remove the bitterness from the peels.
(Parts of my peels were soaked for 3, 5 and 7 days. I did it separately because I couldn't eat all the oranges in a day.)
5. Drain well the orange peels and weigh them (use the same amount of sugar or a bit less).
6. Cook the peels with water over a medium heat until slightly tender (about 15 mins), uncovered.
7. Add sugar to the pan, reduce the heat to low and stir gently time to time.
8. Simmer until the syrup is quite thick (about 30 mins).
9. Set a few baking sheets, remove peels from syrup and roll in sugar, separating strips.
10. Let dry for 2 days.

Wandering through the shops of chinatown, I've found these supper sweet and sooo cheap red converse-like shoes that were begging me to get them and to make good use of them. In another shop I've seen some studs that seemed interesting enough, so I thought I'd give it a try.
I have to say that I'm not a big fan of intellectual property theft, especially of something as iconic as these shoes are (that's right, for me they are shoes, not sneakers), so I had to think twice. It was, wearing "fake" converse (they don't have a brand tag, but the design is totally stolen), or spending 40 euros (yes, that's the price in Italy) for the original pair. Normally I would opt for the original solution, but since we're talking the 2 seasons trend (the studs), I went for the cheap one!

What you'll need:
- 60 cone studs
- a pair of shoes
- a pair of scissors (or a screwdriver) to press stud closures
The whole thing was very easy to make, you just puts studs randomly and you're done. The only part that was a bit tricky was a counter part of the shoe because of the foxing. It was so hard that I literally crashed a couple of studs... but fortunately persistence pays off!
Drug half-faces

When I was a kid, my dad took me and my brother to a drug rehabilitation center to show us the gravity and the consequences that the consumption of drugs has on one's life. We had a chance to talk to people who were in the treatment and it had quite an impact on me and on my seeing of the things that were so far from me. Taking us there was a bit radical, but I have found it to be a great educational measure.
Everyone has their own philosophy of values in life and having the values that my parents taught me it is hardly possible for me to fall into the trap of drug use, but our visit to the rehab has had it's part for sure.
Roman Sakovich, a Lithuanian photographer based in London, inspired by the experience of his friends, created portraits that show what people look like before and after abusing substances. Make-up artists used theatrical makeup on one side of the face and kept the other side normal. Costume designers did their best to allow the photographer to do everything in-camera rather than in post-production.
Waste Land

Some time ago I watched a consciousness raising documentary "Waste Land" about a project of a Brazilian contemporary artist with a NYC address Vik Muniz. The movie was shot at one of the world's largest landfills, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The artist spent two years working on this project and in the movie we get to know people who make a living picking the recyclables.
The garbage-pickers (2500 people) spend their days digging through piles of trash, day and night, in the worst conditions ever, yet they remain joyful, happy to be able to make an honest job. For most of them, the alternative would be drug-dealing or prostitution, but this way at least at the end of the working day they can wash off the dirt.
The artist photographs some of the pickers and gets to know them better, goes to their homes, meets their families, talks to them about their hopes and dreams, their past and their future.

The characters Vik choose are very different one from another:
-Suelem, an 18-year-old single mother of two, working since she was 7 to support a family. While dreaming of being able to take care of her kids she feeds herself with the food she finds among the dump and tells a story of how she found a dead baby in one of the piles.
-Tiao, a charismatic young man who tries to improve pickers' lives by organizing them.
-Zumbi, a man who collects and reads all of the books he finds.
-Isis, a young girl who's been going through a break-up and who hates her job tells her tragic story.
-Irma, a cook who does her best to find the freshest ingredients she can.
-Magna, who has a beautiful smile, started garbage-picking to support her family when her husband lost his job.
-Valter, an elder man without any education, who has been doing this job for 26 years made a few statements that would make seriously rethink recycling everyone (hopefully).
"One single can is of great importance because 99 is not 100, and that single one will make the difference."

Vik Muniz took pictures of the pickers at the landfill and then recreated portraits with their help using the recyclable items from the dump. The results are very complex portraits that tell a story even without knowing anything about these people.

I think we should take better care of the environment and stop taking it for granted. Movies like Waste Land can be a great wake up call, I recommend it to everyone!
Meet Charlotte, aka Charlie

I've always been good with hands, since I was very young I enjoyed
doing crafts, sketching, cutting other people's hair, cutting my hair, whatever included
manual work I could direct was my thing.
A couple of years back my brother (who is a few years older) got me this super cool sewing machine as a surprise gift. His intention was to get me back on the track, to help me express my creativity and maybe to help me choose another profession. When it was first delivered, I didn't know what to do with it, how to use it and/or where to keep it, it seemed like a very complicated gift to deal with. I felt as if someone just gave me a hamster. Not that it was needy, but just as one of those gifts you're not suppose to present (you are not supposed to give animals, unless requested). Nowadays, I can say I really appreciate his gesture. It hasn't drastically changed my life, but for sure it has had some positive influence on me.

At first, I started off a bit too ambitious, got Burda (a fashion magazine with patterns) and wanted to sew a tailored jacket. The problem was that I didn't even know how to thread the machine, not even to mention the use of other parts. It took me ages to understand how to put pieces together, countless tutorials on youtube and numerous searches on google. By the time I learned how to do it, I got annoyed, it was too time consuming and I wasn't seeing any results, so I gave up and put it away in a closet.

A year ago, I got tulle and lace fabric for my Halloween costume and after the party, had quite some leftovers that I didn't want to throw away, but didn't know how to use either. (for everyone imagining Carrie- Paris dress, not that much!) After a small search online I got some inspiration and started making fabric flowers. This got me to the next step, pulling out my sewing machine so I could apply the flowers onto something. The first piece I ever sewed was a small black satin purse. I wasn't that handy with zippers at the time so you can find glue traces all over it. I think the final result actually looks very nice, even though I have never used it because the lining (an old bed sheet) gets into the zipper and blocks it. I'm very satisfied with how the flowers turned out as well.

Here are some pics of the purse
I have to say that I still don't know how to use my sewing machine well, I still have breakdowns when it doesn't work as it should or when it blocks (it's my fault because it means I'm not using it the right way), but I really enjoy being able to make something with my hands that I can wear, or to make my friends happy.

Sometimes I stay in instead of going out and I sew. It might not be quality time with friends, but it sure is quality time, I'm developing a new skill. I named her Charlotte (Charlie for friends) so I don't feel alienated when I tell my friends the reason I'm not joining them. Sounds better when I say: "Tonight I'm hanging out with Charlie".

Have a lovely weekend!
I just wanted to share with you the amazing gesture these two french girls did earlier in the day in Marseille, France. Since it was first published, the picture has been retweeted thousands of times.

The big deal about this picture isn't the fact that there are two girls kissing, it's that they were kissing in front of the outraged mass, the anti-gay marriage demonstrators- Amazing!!
The girls said that they are both straight (not that it matters) and that they did it to demonstrate solidarity.
The world definitely needs more people like this!
Chapeau!
